A few miscellaneous things

A couple of things I felt were worth mentioning as we go into another weekend.

Ross is all abuzz about 64-bit Excel. Read about it at 64 bit VBA. Turns out there are some important changes that developers need to be aware of if they want to have Office 2010-compatible applications!

This site is listed on Gray Knowlton's list of useful sites for Office development. Check out the list on his blog post Office 2010 Questions Answered for new Office developers. Thanks Gray!

I set up a new shopping page. Eventually it will replace the existing bookstore.

I briefly thought about listing in the Office Marketplace (thanks to a friendly Smurf), but not only are they locked down for six months while they upgrade the website, new additions have to be compatible with the new Office version (soon to be 2010), and my stuff is barely up to speed with Office 2007. I'm guaranteed to be rejected.

The hotlink protection on downloads has been removed, in preparation for a more robust solution involving PHP and .htaccess redirection. It's a hack, for sure, but it's better than what I was doing before. I might have to briefly shut down the blog and the site in order to implement, because it could be disruptive for anyone trying to download during that time. Plus it needs to be tested, and it's easier to test on the "live" site than in a test environment.

You might have noticed a few subtle (and not so subtle) changes to the blog. The sidebar is a bit more dynamic, and the front page only shows post excerpts. I've also been playing with the header and footer, I'm never happy so I'm always tweaking it. The number of Twitter tweets for each post is listed next to the post title (feel free to use it to tweet about any post on this site).
